Spiti Valley

Land of Lamas, Mysteries, and Adventure.

A mountainous cold desert freckled with green patches over a dry weather-beaten face, fascinating valleys, windswept landscapes and quiet villages, Spiti, which loosely translates as ‘the middle land’. The geographic placement passes a heavy influence of Buddhism and stark cultural similarities of the region into the valley. Religion plays a major role in everyday life, testified by the piles of ‘mani’ stones, whitewashed chortens that house Buddhist relics, and prayer flags fluttering relentlessly in thin air. Echoes of ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ (literally, ‘Behold the Jewel in the Lotus’) by all bring good fortune and prosperity to the distant land. Novelist Rudyard Kipling in his book ‘Kim’ describes Spiti as ‘a world within a world,’ ‘a place where the gods live’ – something that holds true to the present day.

Day 1

CHANDIGARH – SHIMLA – NARKANDA

Fly to Chandigarh. On arrival transfer to Narkanda. By evening arrive Narkanda and check into Hotel. Overnight in Narkanda.

Day 2

NARKANDA – JEORI – WANGTU – KARCHAM – SANGLA (165 KMS)

After breakfast drive through Rampur and Jeori, pass the Wangtu bridge then drive towards, Karcham reach Sangla walk the market place if time allows. Visit the Kamru Fort & the Temple of the village deity in Sangla village. Overnight in Sangla.

Day 3

SANGLA – CHITKUL – KALPA (52 KM)

After breakfast drive towards Chitkul. Chitkul can be described as one of the most scenic settlements in the valley and the last inhabited village before the India-China border. This short drive from Sangla to Chitkul will be one of the most scenic drives you’ll take with plenty of opportunities to take stunning photographs. Walk around the Bapsa river and pay tribute to the Mathi Goddess at the temple in the village. After spending time in Chitkul, we turn around and head to Kalpa. Enroute visit the monastery in Reckong – Peo with a 60 ft tall statue of Buddha. Legend says that Kalpa was the winter home of Lord Shiva. If it’s true, he couldn’t have found a more remarkable abode for himself, with enthrallingly majestic views of the Kinner-Kailash and Jorkandan peaks looming right above the village. Overnight in Kalpa.

Day 4

KALPA – NAKO (120 KM)

After breakfast drive to Nako. Enroute visiting Kanum monastery, library of Kangyur, Gompa Labrang, the Gompa of Tashi Cholling, Morang and Labrang villages. Nako has a beautiful lake which freezes in the winter and villagers play ice hockey during this period and seeing the temple of Padamsambhava, the second incarnation of lord Buddha who made Buddhism popular in the Trans Himalayas. Overnight in Nako.

Day 5

NAKO – TABO – DHANKAR – KUNGRI – MUD – KAZA (180 KM)

After breakfast drive through the desert mountain range with villages & Desert Mountains in the surroundings. Visit Tabo monastery. Later drive to Dhankar the old capital of Spiti, visit the museum,drive towards Kungri monastery and have lunch on the way in Gulling, then drive towards the village Mud. Reach Kaza in evening. Overnight in Kaza.

Day 6

KAZA – KOMIK – HIKKIM – LANGZA – KI MONASTERY – KIBBER – KAZA

Known for being the highest inhabited village in Asia, today we visit Komik. See the beautiful monastery overlooking the village. Although women are not allowed in the main prayer room, visit the monastery at Komik. Enjoy a bird’s eye view of Komik village from here. From here, we descend towards Langza. Holding huge appeal for the history-lover, this area is very rich in fossils of marine life and animals. In prehistoric times, Spiti was a part of the Tethys Sea and remnants of that can still be found here. Later drive to Kibber, stop by the 1000-year-old Ki (Key) Monastery. The largest monastery in the Spiti Valley, at an altitude of 13,667 feet above sea level, this fort like structure is perched overlooking the winding Spiti river. With stunning snow-capped mountains in the backdrop, this monastery built in the Pasada style, houses nearly 250 monks in its premises. Drive back to Kaza. Overnight in Kaza.

Day 7

KAZA – LOSER – KUNZUM LA – BATAL – CHANDERTAAL (90 KMS)

After breakfast drive towards Chandertaal passing Losar and Kunzum La (4551mtrs).Then drive next to river Chandra and reach your camps before Chandertaal. After lunch go for a walk towards Lake. Overnight in Chandertaal.

Day 8

CHANDRA TAAL – CHATRU – ROHTANG PASS – MANALI (200 KM)

Early morning after breakfast drive towards Manali passing Chattru and reach Rohtang Pass (3970mtrs). Drive towards Manali. Overnight in Manali.

Day 9

MANALI – KULLU – MANDI – BILASPUR – CHANDIGARH DROP

Fly Back. Tour concludes.

• All transportation Ex. Chandigarh as per the itinerary by Tempo Traveller.

• Ahmedabad – Chandigarh – Ahmedabad Airfare in case of Ex. Ahmedabad.

REGISTRATION

For registration fill up the application form duly signed with advance fee equal to 50% of the tour cost & one recent passport size photo. Balance amount payable before 30 days from program starting date. All the charges are per person. Cheque / DD should be in favour of Camp Wanderers, payable Ahmedabad. Organisers reserve the right of admission. The total cost includes accommodation, food & travel. Kindly submit photo copy of your Photo ID proof. You are supposed to carry original copy of the same during the journey.

DISCIPLINE

Unreasonable behaviour as well as use of drugs, alcohol & tobacco in any form is strictly prohibited during entire programme. Any defaulters will immediately be sent back at their own risk and cost & disciplinary action will be taken against them. The discipline also include to carry out any task in connection with the programme assigned by the Camp Leaders.

• Medical and insurance of any kind.

• Guide Charges, Any Camera charges, Entry Fees.

• Entry Fee, Guide Fee, Camera / Mobile Fee for monuments and places of interest if any.

• Cost incidental to any change in the itinerary / stay on account of flight delay/cancellation, bad weather, ill health, roadblocks, strike, mishaps, landslide, political unrest, or any other natural calamities and/or any factors beyond control. In such case, extra will be charged as per actual.

• Tips, laundry, liquors, wines, mineral water, telephone charges, and items of personal nature.

SAFETY & FIRST AID

A great deal of preparation has gone into the planning of the camps / eco tours for ensuring safety. While every care has been taken to ensure safety of the participants, CAMP WANDERERS cannot be held responsible for any accident, illness and such other unforeseen eventualities. Organisers will not be responsible for loss, theft or any damage to participants luggage throughout the entire camp / eco tour. First-aid facilities will be available at every campsite. Those on special treatment or with known drug allergies should carry their own necessary medicines.

CANCELLATION

More than 21 days prior to departure : 25 % of the Package Cost will be charged.
Between 7 & 21 days prior to departure : 50% of the Package Cost will be charged
Less than 7 days prior to departure : 100% of the Package Cost will be charged

RULES & REGULATIONS

Applicants not interested in community living need not apply.
Liquor, Tobacco & Smoking is strictly prohibited.
Registration is non-transferable to any other camp/programme/group or to any other person.
Camp Wanderers reserves the right to reject any application without assigning any reasons.
Camp Wanderers shall not be liable for any loss or damage to the person or property as well as personal belongings of participants.
The time schedule & discipline will have to be strictly observed by the participant during the programme.
Any loss or damage to the equipments provided by Camp Wanderers shall be charged extra.
Camp Wanderers reserves its right to cancel any camp without prior notice.
Camp Wanderers may also be cancel a camp in case the camp fails to accumulate enough participation. Under such circumstance, alternative batch or camp may be suggested or the amount paid towards the camp will be refunded by A/C payee cheque only. No other claims will be entertained.
Camp Wanderers reserves its right to increase the fee, change the number of days or trek route, if situation so desires due to unforeseen reasons or circumstances such decisions shall be implied and fully binding to all the participants.
Camp Wanderers will make best efforts to provide & give facility as per details of programme. However, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond control, Camp Wanderers shall have full rights to alter or change or cancel any programme or activity without prior notice and shall not be held responsible.
In the unlikely event, if a camp/programme/group results in an extended stay, each participant is liable to pay INR. 700.00 in cash to the camp leader.
All legal matters shall be subject to Ahmedabad City Courts Jurisdiction only.
Any and every oral instruction or instructions by Camp Wanderers shall have to be strictly observed and followed by the participants.
Defaulter in any way and manner will be immediately terminated from the camp/programme/group without assigning any reason or reasons.
In case of termination from the camp/programme/group, no refund shall be granted. Accommodation and logistics upon termination is solely participant’s responsibility.
Camp Wanderers reserves the right to use participant information and/or media in marketing collaterals and press releases.
Camp Wanderers is not liable to share any details of participants on a camp.
Local cheque/DD to be submitted in favour of “Camp Wanderers”. Additional charge if INR. 300.00 may be applicable per cheque in case of dishonour of cheque.
The balance amount payable before 30 days from program starting date. Failure to do so will result in automatic cancellation without any notice. No refund claims would be entertained in case of this cancellation.
Camp Wanderers shall not liable in case of any conflict or conflicts between participant or participants.
All additional charges in case of an injury or severe illness that result in participant being admitted to a hospital or be sent back by flight or any other means of transport, are to be borne in full by the parents. In the light of expense paid by Camp Wanderers, the same has to be transferred within 24 hours.
